Over the last couple of weeks emails have been sent to all our existing schools and to potential new schools too. There are offers and incentives in place for new schools that show offer some level of interest before 25th May (half-term). As Thumbs Up enjoy a relatively relaxing couple of weeks for spring break, the work is still going on in the background, getting ready for our programmes for the summer term. A really exciting and diverse term ahead of us, of course the usual transition work, but some small group and individual work too. If your child will see us in the summer term, don't forget to tell them to come and say hello to us and tell them that they've been reading our website, that's always worth a high five and a Thumbs Up sticker!
22nd March 2018
Thumbs Up were delighted that Sue was invited to be the guest speaker at The Wirral Dyslexia Society AGM this week. It was wonderful to share some of the passion and motivation that Thumbs Up have to help children with special educational needs. It is fantastic that there are organisations such as this, ticking along 'behind the scenes' in order to help and advise schools, teachers, parents and carers with the important issues surround SEN.
8th March 2018
Thumbs Up are excited as this new half-term begins as we welcome another new faciliator 'on board', we will be introducing Louise to you all next week! Louise's first school she will be faciliating at is Riverside Primary School in Wallasey.

So as we begin this half-term with snow and windy and cold weather, we can look forward to a shorter half-term than usual. A teacher reliably informed Thumbs Up that it is four weeks and four days (not that he was counting!). So Thumbs Up would like to wish you a 'Happy Spring' - albeit a very snowy start, and hope to see you very soon.
7th February 2018
STATEMENT FROM THUMBS UP
Yesterday (6th February), I made a decision to terminate the contract that Thumbs Up has with Edsential.I have been mulling over this decision for quite some time, and it has not come easily at all.I have enjoyed the time that Thumbs Up have spent working in partnership with Edsential, however, it has become apparent that our priorities and work practices differ greatly.Thumbs Up will continue to grow, bringing in two new facilitators in the very near future, both bringing an exciting new skill set to the company. Our priorities will always be the schools we work at – the staff, parents and carers and most importantly the children, and as Thumbs Up continues to move forward and deliver our programme to more schools, this will not change – I can assure you. We will still offer the same motivation, passion, friendliness and of course our own unique personal touch – it’s important that you – the schools, together with us – Team Thumbs Up, develop a relationship of trust, honesty and reliability amidst the level of professionalism that we offer.I would like to wish Edsential well, as they progress into the future, however, we will not be looking back, we will be looking forward with the continued excitement and positivity that has brought us to this point now.
Thank you for your continued support.

We hope everyone is having a wonderful summer holidays. It's been a busy time in the last couple of weeks, starting to get everything prepared for the next school term. We are proud to share this with you (see below). Sue is very lucky and privileged to also be able to co-facilitate a Macmillan Cancer Survivorship course here on the Wirral; throughout the sessions, the facilitators and participants set goals for themselves and then share (if they wish) throughout the continuation of the programme. Sue set herself a goal to write a poem - from diagnosis of her illness to now facilitating the programme. The poem has been picked up by Macmillan and the HOPE programme and now has been animated by students from Coventry University. Please take a look at the link below:-

This screenshot that was made from a message that we received from a young lady from Fender Primary School yesterday following induction day. This girl was going to Wirral Grammar School for Girls on her own, all her friends were going elsewhere. Through Thumbs Up we were able to ask other girls going to the same school as her to look out for her, and a lovely girl from Rock Ferry Primary School did just that, and this is the result:-
We cannot tell you how proud I am of the girls involved, this made our year - thank you.

As we come towards the end of the school term and we say 'goodbye' to some year 6 children, we also get to welcome new schools 'on board' for next year - so welcome to St Patrick's Catholic Primary School and Holy Cross Catholic Primary School, both schools in Liverpool. The future looks very bright for this partnership, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Edsential for showing faith in the programme and for sharing the passion that we have in helping children with their mental health and wellbeing. We share with you a little photo of Sue 'doing her stuff' at the first of two workshops she presented on the day.

Good morning, so pleased to be able to introduce our new Thumbs Up trainee facilitator Debbie Rainbow-Sandham. I have met Debbie through a MacMillan Cancer Survivorship Programme based here on the Wirral, where we are both lucky enough to co-facilitate. I am delighted that Debbie is 'on-board', I truly believe she will be an asset both to Thumbs Up and the schools and children she sees. She is presently undertaking her Cognitive Behavioural Therapy qualification. Look out for Debbie observing and co-facilitating with me over the next few months, looking forward to her facilitating on her own into the winter term of 2016/17. Well done Debbie, so pleased to have you with us. Debbie will also be joining me on Friday at the Edsential Conference.
6th June 2016
Good afternoon, well finally I get to announce my very exciting news...! Thumbs Up have been invited to work in partnership with Edsential. Edsential is a jointly owned company that was launched at the end of 2015 by Wirral and Cheshire West and Chester councils and invite approximately 300 schools in these areas to 'buy into' the services they provide. Therefore Thumbs Up will be working in conjunction with the Health and Wellbeing side of the business, still doing exactl...y as we are now, but with the backing of this forward thinking and exciting company. On Friday Thumbs Up have been invited to our first Edsential conference and I will be presenting a workshop twice throughout the day. The conference is at the Village Hotel in Bromoborough, and is based around PE, Sport and Health. My workshop will look at the relationship between good physical and mental health, and how one enhances the other. Also Rebecca Adlington is speaking at the conference, all very thrilling! These are really exciting times for Thumbs Up, I cannot thank everyone who has supported me and let me share my vision with them, I really do hope this is the start of even bigger things for Thumbs Up...and of course I will keep you posted. And now I'm just spoiling you, as there will be more news to share tomorrow. Please take a look at the link below, take a look at Edsential's website, and as always if there's anything you would like to ask, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org, or indeed if you would like to contact Edsential for future bookings etc, please contact email@example.com. Please click below for more information on Edsential.

More exams!! Once again good luck to everyone with GCSE's (and others) this week. As I said last week - you can only do your best. If you walk out of an exam knowing that, then take that into your next one. Try to keep calm and alleviate the levels of stress by doing something nice - like listening to music or chatting with your friends. GOOD LUCK!! And don't forget if you need a few pointers or ideas, just get in touch. Sue x
10th May 2016
Good luck to each and every child that is starting their SATs this week. Always remember that there is nothing better than your best that you can do, and when the test is done...it's done...there is nothing to be gained by worrying. The less stressed you are, the better your ability to perform in tests, so parents - try your best to keep your children calm and distracted by lovely things. GOOD LUCK. And if anyone needs a few pointer, don't forget to drop me an email. Sue x
19th April 2016

If you or your child has received the Thumbs Up Programme, there is now a lovely 'summing sheet' of the entire programme that can be emailed to you. If this is something you would like to receive, please email Thumbs Up and we will get one sent to you.
23rd February 2016
We have developed a short two session programme that will be presented to pupils undertaking the 11 plus exam this September. The programme will be held in the couple of weeks prior to the exams in mid September. The programme will focus on building emotional and mental strength, and to try and eradicate the nerves and anxiety towards the exam - in turn this will give the child the best change possible to attain the result they desire. If you are interested in this programme for your school, please get in touch. There will be limited availability owing to the short span of time between the return to school and commencement of the exams.
22nd February 2016
We would just like to welcome everyone back to school after the school holidays and wish you a wonderful new new school half-term. We will be preparing for all our summer sessions over this half-term - pretty much booked up for summer now. We have some brilliant new content for our summer transition programme, and some new activities incorporated too. If you wish to find out more information, please send us an email or contact us via the contact page. Thanks.
9th February 2016
Don't forget we still have some sessions available for April and May if there is a particular issue surrounding a small group of children or individual that you feel Thumbs Up may be able to help with. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss how we can create a bespoke programme to meet your child/children's requirements.
26th January 2016
I am pleased to announce that with immediate effect, Thumbs Up are now offering a couple of additions to the present programmes. Firstly, I have now qualified to become a grief and bereavement counsellor, for working with children. It has been very apparent that a lot of children struggle immensely following the loss of a loved one (including pets), and sometimes don't know how to grieve and vent their sorrow. Under this umbrella will also fall - 'how to deal with serious illness in the family', again, this is a significant concern of a child and I believe with the tools that I have developed, that this is an area where I can help too. Secondly, I have created a wonderful 'Introduction to Mindfulness' session; I do 'touch on' Mindfulness within the programme, but just for ten minutes or so, this session lasts an hour, and we do some lovely exercises that I believe the children will be able to introduce into their every day lives. If you wish to find out any more information about any of these new services, do not hesitate to contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
11th January 2016
Well back to the programme tomorrow at Orrets Meadow, and some exciting meetings on Wednesday, and then more preparation for the following week, when I start two new small group/individual programmes at two different schools. A lot of prep work being done at the moment, all busy busy here, please get in touch as always if you wish to discuss anything Thumbs Up related with me.
4th January 2016
Thumbs Up are getting booked up very quickly for the summer term, if you wish to book in for this term, please contact us as soon as possible at email@example.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
3rd January 2016
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! We would like to wish you a very happy, healthy and peaceful 2016. So many exciting programmes coming up here at Thumbs Up. Spring term is very much about small groups and individual children, working on such issues as raising self-esteem and self-confidence, and how to turn situations around to look at them in a more positive fashion. If this applies to any pupils at your school, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
10th December 2015
Thumbs Up are delighted to announce that we will be supporting Clatterbridge Cancer Charity for the rest of this school year up until July 2016. We will be continuing our sponsored weight loss challenge up until Easter of next year, and then in the summer term, we will be focussing on different fundraising ideas. We are delighted to be supporting such a wonderful cause that is very close to our hearts. Please click on the link on the Home Page if you wish to find out more information about the work this wonderful charity does.
3rd December 2015
We are so pleased to announce that during the spring term, Thumbs Up will be dedicating the vast majority of the time to working with small groups or individuals, and then returning to the full groups in the summer term. This gives us a chance to work with children that we have identified as needing some further help over this autumn term, and focus more so on their individual or group needs. These sessions are proving to be invaluable, with many children making further advancement with their particular needs. If you would like to discuss how Thumbs Up may be able to help you or your school through the spring term, please do not hesitate to get in touch either by email (press button below) or via the contact page on this website. Many thanks.
23rd November 2015
I am super excited to announce to you that I have co-authored on a book with a wonderful writer called Louise Mullins and it is now for sale from Amazon in paperback or for the Kindle. The book is called 'A New Theory for Obsessive Thoughts and Compulsive Behaviours?'. I am so thankful to Louise for asking me to work on the book with her, and I hope (if you buy it!), it will prove to be invaluable reading and certainly give you something to think about. Please click on the link below if you wish to find out more. Many thanks. Sue
20th November 2015
Today we received our 500th Twitter follower, it is so exciting to see how far Thumbs Up has come in such a short while. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has read, favourited or retweeted a post from Thumbs Up and helped get the word of the work we do around.
16th November 2015
This weeks sees the start of 'Anti-bullying week'. Bullying has become somewhat a big part of the programme, as I have identified that the fear in children towards the 'big kids' at High School is very real, and can increase their levels of anxiety towards the 'big move'. Throughout the sessions (but primarily session four), we talk about the best way to deal with bullying and I encourage the children to seek advice and help from those around them, ie a family member or a teacher, as soon as they feel that they are struggling themselves.
3rd November 2015
Hope everyone had a pleasant half-term. An exciting week ahead with a couple of new schools starting with the programme and a couple of meetings in the pipeline too over the next couple of weeks, hopefully there will be more news and more schools to announce very soon.
20th October 2015
Here at Thumbs Up we are constantly absorbing all the comments, questions and observations both the children and the teachers/Heads are making about the content of the programme. After all, we stress all the time, that the Thumbs Up Programme is for you - the schools, the children and the parents. Therefore, we will be undertaking our own training in certain aspects where there are obvious concerns - we will be announcing in the next month or so, another 'string to our bow', which we believe will prove an invaluable asset both to Thumbs Up and to certain children that we see.
13th October 2015
A bit of a 'heads up' to those schools who may be considering booking the programme for the future - Thumbs Up will be not working in schools for December and January (to be confirmed), as Sue will be undergoing knee replacement surgery. This will be confirmed when a definite date has been given. Sorry for any inconvenience.
3 October 2015
This week Sue finished presenting the programme at four schools - St Alban's, St George's, Park and Rock Ferry. Sue has seen in the region of approximately 250 children, and we can confirm that she loved every minute of it! On Monday Sue finishes at St Bridget's, and then starts on Tuesday and Thursday at Orrets Meadow and Grove Street respectively.
Message from Sue:-
Thank you so much to all the amazing schools that have just completed the Thumbs Up Programme, it has been a privilege to work with some fantastic children, and I hope to work with you again in the future. Thank you again. Sue x
21st September 2015
We are really pleased to announce that Sue Mason has been asked to co-author a new book looking at the theories of obsession and compulsion. This is an exciting new direction for Sue, but not to worry - she will remain fully committed to the Thumbs Up Programme, which is her main focus at all times. Sue is also in the process of looking at recruiting at one or two new facilitators, to enable Thumbs Up to reach out further and wider, as she continues in her ultimate goal of reaching every Wirral primary school child with Thumbs Up.
18th September 2015
Thumbs Up are pleased to announce that the combined weight loss between Sue and Jackie for week two and into week three is 9.5 pounds. If you wish to continue to keep pushing them to make their goal of two stone for Christmas, please take a look at our Just Giving page below and donate - however small. It is truly much appreciated. Also it has been decided that instead of changing the charity Thumbs Up are to support every term, we have made the decision that we are going to change it on a school yearly basis. So Clatterbridge Cancer Charity as you know, is the chosen charity for this year, and we are so proud to be supporting such a worthwhile cause.
11th September 2015
I would just like to confirm that I will attending two of the five EQ roadshows this autumn. I would like to have attended all of them, but I am committed to presenting the programme already on these days, and I do not want to let my existing schools down in any way. I am hoping that in the spring term, I will be able to attend all of the roadshows. The two I will be at are:- The Birkenhead North Cluster on 22nd September and the Deeside Cluster on 9th November. I look forward to seeing you there!
10th September 2015
Well it's been a hectic but fantastic first week of the new autumn term, and I delighted to say that all the new year 6 children have been very receptive to the programme and I've had a really good time presenting it. It's also a learning curve for me too - and I take a lot of what the children say to me on board into further sessions.
3rd September 2015
Thumbs Up would like to wish everyone returning to school all the luck in the world, but especially to all the brave new year 7 children starting their new schools over the next couple of days. Be strong, make a good impression, exude confidence, engage in conversation with other children, concentrate, work hard, have fun, get involved, try new things and perhaps the most important thing is....enjoy yourself. Yes - it is school, but secondary school opens up a whole wealth of opportunity, embrace it...you're there for a long time!
23rd August 2015
Well today the new programme for the autumn term was completed, we are so proud of it, and armed with all the information collated from the teachers and children from the summer programmes, we have been able to enhance certain aspects, take a couple of topics out and add new fresh ideas. We can't wait to get started now for the autumn term. Keep looking at our Facebook page, and this...our latest news page for more exciting news coming soon! Thank you for your continued support.
11th August 2015
Message from my Just Giving Page:-
Through my company - The Thumbs Up Education Programme, I will be fundraising for different charities - changing the chosen charity on a termly basis. I chose Clatterbridge as my first charity to support, because it is offers the most amazing care for cancer patients within my locality - the Wirral and further afield too. I was lucky enough to be supported by the psychology department following my illness and both close family and friends continue to be supported through the Oncology Centre. For my first venture into fundraising, myself and my partner Jackie, decided that we would incentivise ourselves with a weight loss challenge by raising money for this amazing charity. So our aim, is to lose two stone (between us) for Christmas. So from 1st September, we will be setting the wheels in motion and doing everything we can to achieve our goal. I will also be having a knee replacement operation in December, so for me there is a little more incentive - to get myself fit and well for then. Thumbs Up will also be 'shaking a tin' at various roadshows to increase the money raised and on these occasions we will be offering a raffle prize to anyone who donates. We would so appreciate your donations - however small, and we will keep you updated through our Facebook page on the progress of our weight loss...I haven't thought about the consequences of us not doing it, so please keep us incentivised and help us raise money for this wonderful cause. Many thanks Sue and Jackie x
If you wish to donate...firstly thank you...and please find the link below:-
1st August 2015
A new help sheet has been added today - 'Helping With Homework'. This not only has been created by Thumbs Up but also by a year 11 student, going into her final GCSE year at West Kirby Grammar School. Thanks to Jemma for your help and invaluable advice and techniques that you have offered.
30th July 2015
Please note that Sue will be unable to present the programme herself from beginning of December to mid January (TBC) and therefore not be taking bookings over this period of time, due to an operation. We apologise for the inconvenience, but please be assured that there is no disruption to any programme already booked.
30th July 2015
We are hoping that throughout the autumn term, there will be one or two potential facilitators coming with Sue to observe the programme being delivered with a view to becoming a Thumbs Up facilitator and presenting the programme themselves in the future. Sue assures any potential schools that the new facilitators will be delivering the programme to her exacting standards and is really excited with this next step in the Thumbs Up journey.
17th July 2015
I would just like to take the opportunity to say 'HAPPY SUMMER HOLIDAYS', and I hope each and every one of you, enjoy the summer break, and come back refreshed and energised in September.
12th July 2015
As this summer term draws to a close, I would like to thank all that schools and children that have participated in the programme over this term and of course all the schools that I will be seeing in this coming new school year. The response to the programme has been nothing short of overwhelming and I cannot thank the schools, Heads, Deputy Heads, teachers and TA's for all the support they have shown the programme so early on its life! Thumbs Up will continue to evolve in the new school year with new facilitators being trained and new schools to see, and I cannot wait! If you're school or your child think that the Thumbs Up Programme is something that could help in anyway, please do not hesitate to contact us. Enjoy your summer. Sue x
1st July 2015
We are pleased to announce that following a meeting at Prenton Primary School today, that Thumbs Up will be presenting the programme to the year 6 throughout the next school year. It has been decided following discussions today that the programme will be delivered over five sessions throughout the year, the last session looking at the transition will be held in June 2016. 25th June 2015
So two programmes finished today, a small group of year 6 children at St Alban's and the whole year 6 at Mersey Park. I have really enjoyed working with these children, it has been a privilege to help them in just a small part on their next steps moving to secondary school. I am back to St Alban's in September, and hopefully Mersey Park too at some point in the future. Thank you to both schools for showing the support for Thumbs Up. Please take a look at the word cloud page on this website, to see how the children have progressed from week 1 to week 4.

Yet another exciting announcement to make - Black Horse Hill Junior School are coming 'on board' with the programme, and in November of this year, Thumbs Up will be presenting the Preparation Programme to the year 6. I am super excited to have this opportunity, as this was the primary school that my two children attended, so it has a very special place in my heart. Thank you BHH for your support for the programme.
15th June 2015
I am so pleased to announce that today I had another successful meeting with St Anne's Catholic Primary School. They have invited me to present the Preparation Programme to their year 6's in the autumn term. Another lovely school that I am privileged to be working at with these amazing children.
13th June 2015
I am pleased to announce that from the autumn school term, and on a termly basis, Thumbs Up will be supporting a charity by way of a donation and some fundraising. Our focus will mainly be on local charities or national children's charities. If you have any suggestions as to what charities you feel may meet this criteria, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Thank you.
5th June 2015
I am so pleased to announce that Thumbs Up have been invited by the Wirral EQ Headteacher Manager to give a presentation of the Thumbs Up Programme to the EQ Roadshows in the autumn term, here on the Wirral. There will be five roadshows initially that I will present at, each containing a cluster of Wirral schools. I am both proud and privileged to have been asked, and I cannot wait to get word of Thumbs Up further afield.
2nd June 2015
As the new school term approaches at apace, I am continuing to tinker around with the transition programme to deliver what I believe is a programme that covers all the issues that may be the forefront in the minds of the children at this point in the year. Therefore, with some feedback from pupils, parents and teachers, I have decided to add 'how to deal with stress' to session four of the transition programme. Also there is a help sheet to accompany this if you would like to email Thumbs Up for a copy:- firstname.lastname@example.org
28th May 2015
I'm really excited to announce that from September 2015, Thumbs Up will be working for three hours per week at Orrets Meadow Primary School, working with pupils of all ages with many emotional issues that may arise for children of primary school age and I will be working closely with both the staff and the children to achieve an ongoing positive and healthy mental wellbeing. I am delighted to be welcomed into Orrets Meadow and can't wait to get started!
21st May 2015
Today Thumbs Up completed the first programme at Mersey Park to their year 5; what an amazing group of children they were. I'm back at Mersey Park to present the programme to the year 6 in June - I can't wait! Thank you so much to Mersey Park for making me feel so welcome and supporting the programme before it was even established.

Also my first enquiry from a school outside of The Wirral has been received...that's exciting!

Today was the day of the first presentation of the Thumbs Up Education Programme. This first programme was a Year 5 Programme presented to three groups of 15 pupils at Mersey Park Primary School...and what a lovely school to start with! The children were very welcoming and seemed extremely responsive to the Programme, it really couldn't have gone any better. Thank you Mersey Park Primary School for making me feel so welcome.

We are pleased to announce another school coming 'on board' with Thumbs Up. We will be presenting the Year 6 Transition Programme in June/July and a Year 6 Preparation Programme to the new year 6 in September to Rock Ferry Primary School. We are really looking forward to working with the children there. June/July now pretty much booked up for the full programme, however, we can still accommodate 'one offs' working with smaller groups if your school feel it would be beneficial for them.
21 April 2015
We have a new addition to our Thumbs Up 'family'; I'd like to introduce to you - Tommy Thumb. Tommy has made a successful transition to secondary school, but wasn't without his anxiety issues in primary school, he is looking forward to sharing some of his techniques with the children! The use of hand puppets is fairly commonplace in primary schools, it has been found that it can engage children who may lack concentration and it is a practiced technique for overcoming shyness. I may use Tommy to depict certain situations if I feel the need arises and I feel the children will be responsive. Welcome Tommy!
18 April 2015
Just reached the grand old number of 400 'likes' on Facebook. My 400th 'likee' received a Thumbs Up pen - much coveted and sought after! Who will be my 500th?

We hit 200 'likes' on Facebook!!
We are pleased to announce that with immediate effect Sue Sherratt will be coming on board as our Administration Manager. Sue will increasingly spend more time with the day to day running of Thumbs Up, which will allow 'the other' Sue (Mason), to spend time developing and presenting the Programme and visiting the schools.
Welcome aboard Sue.
22 March 2015
Soon to be developed - a Parent Programme - helping parents to continue the work that The Thumbs Up Programme has developed with the children. It is important that the work carries on after they have received the Programme in order for them to achieve the most out of it they possibly can.
Also a Tots Programme - younger children feel change too. The transition from nursery to reception can be quite scary. This would be more focussed on fun and gentle learning and coping techniques. Keep your eyes out on the website for updates for both these Programmes!
20 March 2015
The schools we have so far 'on board' are:-
Park Primary School
St Bridget's Primary School
Mersey Park Primary School
Orrets Meadow Primary School
Bidston Avenue Primary School
...with more meetings in the pipeline. If any of your children attend years 5/6 of these schools, let me know via our contact page and I'll look out for them!! And if there's any particular areas you feel it would be advantageous to cover in the Programme, please share it...you can help me to help your children.
